Which is camera is right for you?

I often get asked what camera should I buy?

We could chat for hours over a beer and discuss what you are trying to achieve, but to get you started here are my thoughts on cameras for the starting out photographer. If you are wanting to learn photography basics and make great images with a good camera then here are my recommendations.

I am a huge fan of Nikon and Fujifilm. The Nikon system I have been shooting since 2008 and Fujifilm since 2015.
I am absolutely blown away by the Fujifilm Xt1, the shooting experience is phenomenal and the repo of colours, especially skin tones its angelic. The electronic viewfinder is magic and the whole shooting experience is magic. Lets start with a few basic specs for each camera.

Good Consumer Camera’s


Nikon D3300 – 400 euro, body only

Except it has an articulating screen. Which is great for capturing shots at different angles.

Mirrorless or compact system Cameras

These are a hybrid cameras and Fujifilm is super attractive in this category. The cameras below have large APS-C size sensors but ALSO the newly developed X trans sensor which is a colour filter array with a highly random pixel arrangement. Fujifilm is all about skin tones. If you are going to shoot a lot of people then have a look at the way the fujifilm renders skin tones.

Important Note:

Have a look at the other gear that you might need and costs of :

lenses, flashes, batteries, filters.
Both Nikon and fujiFilm have excellent lenses!

Full Frame is used as term used for the size of the image sensor which is the same size as 35mm format (36×24 mm)
